Anitta wins VMAs 2022 in the Best Latin Video category for ‘Envolver’
Singer Anitta made history this Sunday (28) as the first Brazilian to receive a statuette at the Video Music Awards (VMA) from American MTV. The artist won in the Best Latin Video category with Envolver, competing with J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, and Bad Bunny, who took the Artist of the Year award.
“I just want to say for whoever doesn’t know this, tonight in history is the first time ever that Brazil…it’s the first time ever that my country has warn an award [like this]. I just want to say thank you to my family and to my fans.” Anitta also referenced her humble beginnings in Brazil during her speech. “Tonight, I performed here a rhythm that in my country for many years was considered a crime,” she said. “I was born and raised in the ghetto of Brazil, for whoever was born there…we would never think this was possible, so thank you so much.”
At the event, which took place in New Jersey, Anitta also gave a performance of Envolver followed by a contagious funk carioca act, named by MTV as the sexiest perfomance of the night.
Fully sung in Spanish (Anitta’s first language is Brazilian Portuguese), the song Envolver went viral on social media after fans tried to reproduce the sexy choreography of the music video. The song reached the top of global Spotify in March this year, with more than 2.2 million reproductions outside Brazil.
